Let's journey: In ZAPOTECA Territory ...The Zapotec or "people of sapote" or "people of the clouds" were established in the central valleys of Oaxaca today. They were a people of great cultural level - like the Maya, Toltec and Teotihuacan.
They also developed a complete system of writing, their hieroglyphics and other symbols carved in stone or painted on the buildings in ruins and tombs, so indicate. They were able to combine the representation of ideas and sounds. Developed advanced agriculture and varied that gave sustenance to many villages: Cacao, squash, peppers and a variety of vegetables and of course corn. They worshiped the sun, rain, land and corn. It was the largest city in the Oaxaca region. One of their gods was known as Cocijo god of rain. Represented fertility. In this God combined with Earth and Heaven-Jaguar-Serpent. Common symbols in Mesoamerican lands. Monte Alban archaeological area is very large and beautiful buildings in the form of stages has to play ball, ceremonial structures and tombs. This great city was inhabited for several centuries. But between 700 and 800 A.D. was mysteriously abandoned. Monte Alban overlooking the valley until the late classical period. For the years 700 and 800, as suggested, ended his splendor.
